We have now officially launched our MySpace page. There's a track there called Escape from the Funny Farm, that isn't on any of our albums. It's a 2 minute romper, an improv recorded.. gawd, I don't even remember when. But it's the only improv we've recorded on multitrack.

As for blogging, I'm guessing I'll be doing that more on MySpace from now on. I'll leave this blogg as it is and I'll still update it if we've have a new album to download or if we have a show coming up. Until then, I bid you adieu!

It's been a long time coming..

The first instrument tracks for this album were recorded over three years ago (before Margin of Safety even existed) by me and Mika. Since we started we've been trhough four different recording hardware (computers, digital recorders, microphones, amps and all-sorts periferials) and that in the end resulted in a varying sound quality throught the tracks.

That in count and all other overlapping projects, lack of faith and pure lazyness, the completion of the work kept getting delayed indefinitely.

There were times when each one of us suggested that we scrap everything we've recorded and start from scrach. If we had done that, the album would have been finished at least a year ago. But that wasn't realy an option considering all the work we had already put into it.

Two tracks got dropped of the album (one of them will be re-recorded for our next one and I promise, that one will NOT be three years in the making), one short song was composed and recorded a while ago.

All in all Dream Traps & Black Cats turned out to be a different album than the one we started recording, and that might be a good or a bad thing. But here you are, our first album that due to circumstances came out fourth.

Margin of Safety heittää keikan Tampereen Ravintola Artturissa lauantaina 13.1. 2007.
Alunperin keikan piti olla yhteinen Luovan Satutauon kanssa, mutta Satutauko joutui perumaan esiintymisensä. Eli meidän on venyttävä soittamaan pari n. 45 minuutin settiä. Jos ohjelmisto alkaa loppua kesken, turvaudumme improvisaatioon. Ilmainen sisäänpääsy. Tervetuloa!

Still working

Despite the silence, we are still working on our first album of composed material. Most of the recording is done. We're still a couple of vocal tracks short and there's a all new short ditty that we have to record before we're done. I think it'll be up for download around christmas. But that's not all.

We will put out our third improv album around the same time. It's working title is Bulbus. It was recorded in July in one session, if memory serves me right. The main thing is it's plus thirty minute improvisation with four different sections done in one take. So far I have not edited anything out and I fear there's nothing to edit besides cutting it into tracks.

So we are trying to acheve the impossible. Four albums in a year is not too bad, is it?

Slow progress

Most of the recording is done. Me and Mika will have a session today and a couple later on and that should be it.. Well, for my part that is. After we've done a rough mix, the tracks propably go to a keyboard player. So the final mixing stage won't be untill fall.

Here's the good news. Before we are finished with that stuff, we'll be putting out another compilation of improvised music through Jamendo. There's hours of this stuff to go through, so it'll take a while to deside what to use, but I would guess it'll be available for download in a month or two.

Besides just plunging into improvisations, we've been rehearsing a new track. It's a very hard driven piece of music clocking just over five minutes. The song is called Drive and with it's odd and changing time signatures and six different parts, it's as close to progressive rock as anything. I have to say that the hardest part was to write lycrics to it, not to mention learning how to sing the track. Having an extra head with it's own brain could make it easier.

Gonzo Jazz will be played on RADIO FAJET 94.2 FM (in France !) in a weekly show show called Moultipass featuring CC-licensed music. The show can be listened to via internet on june 7th. The show starts at 9:00 PM IN FRANCE, so you figure out your local time.

When I was editing Gonzo Jazz, I never thought we would get more than 50 listeners. We are very pleased and thanks for all the kind reviews over at Jamendo and a couple of other places.

We had our last rehearsals yesterday for the gig on Wednesday and a photo session with my brother Kimmo behind the camera. Everything went well and we seem to be ready for the show. Well, I came down with a flue and it will affect my voice, but there's no use whining about it so..

There will be two bands playing on wednesday 10th of May at Vastavirta-klubi, Tampere Finland. The first one is Margin of Safety. The second is Luova satutauko. The tickets are 2? (as far as I know). I'm not going to give an exact showtime as I have no idea. Anywhere between 8 PM to 11 PM is my guess.

Eilen vedettiin viimeiset keskiviikon keikkaa edeltävät treenit ja valokuvaussessio, jossa kameraa operoi veljeni Kimmo. Kaikki meni hyvin ja vaikuttaa silotä että olemme valmiit lavalle. No, minä sairastuin flunssaan ja ääni on sen mukainen, mutta valittaminen on hyödytöntä, joten..

Keskiviikkona 10. 5. Vastavirta-klubin lavalle nousee kaksi bändiä. Margin of Safety on ensimmäisenä. Luova satutauko soittaa toisena. Liput on 2? (ainakin minun tietääkseni). Tarkkaa keikan alkamisajankohtaa en yritäkään kertoa. Arvaukseni kuitenkin sijoittuu 20:00 - 23:00 välille.

Despite the recent problems with the downloading of Gonzo Jazz it has been downloaded 281 times since its release. Though we thought this is good music, we honestly didn't expect more than a fiew people to grab the free album. And we certainly didn't expect our noodlings to end up as on-hold-music on Z-Trading's phoneline. Well, we have no problems with that since they're NOT selling firearms, alcohol and tobacco. Actually they're a CD and DVD manufacturing service, so that's fine. There's nothing like free positive publicity. Come to think of it, negative publicity is never free..

The basic tracks for the next bunch of songs are mostly done and we started working on the vocals yesterday. Things went smoothly and and the main vocals and harmonies to Soft Edges are done. I guess we'll continue next week. At the same time we're honing our performance of the tracks. Our first gig is booked for 10th of May at Vastavirta Klubi in Tampere, Finland. More about that later.

Gonzo Jazzin latailussa esintyyneistä viimeaikaisista onglemista huolimatta levyä on jo ehditty ladata 281 kertaa. Vaikka ajattelimme, että levystä tuli hyvä, ei odotukset olleet kummoiset latausmäärien suhteen. Kaikkein vähiten osasimme odottaa näpertelymme päätyvän Z-Tradingin puhelinvaihteeseen jonotusmusiikiksi. Ei meillä mitään ole sitä vastaan, sillä he EIVÄT myy aseita, viinaa ja tupakkaa. Itseasiassa Z-Trading on CD- ja DVD-levyjen valmistuspalvelu, mikä sopiikin hienosti. Ei ole parempaa kuin ilmainen positiivinen julkisuus. Tarkemmin ajateltuna, negatiivinen julkisuus tuskin voi ollakaan ilmaista..

Uusien biisijen pohjaraidat ovat kutakuinkin purkissa ja aloimme eilen työstää lauluraitoja. Asiat etenivät nätisti ja saimme päälaulut ja stemmat valmiiksi Soft Edges-nimiseen teokseen. Nauhoituksia jatketaan ensiviikolla. Ja samanaikaisesti viilaamme biisejä esityskuntoon. Ensimmäinen keikka on 10. 5. Vastavirta klubilla Tampereella. Asiasta enemmän lähempänä ajankohtaa.

Recording..

Been busy recording guitars for our next and first composed cd. It's been interesting, since I'm using a borrowed Music Man Sixty-Five head through two Kasino speakers. The sound is fantastic and very 70's. The stack holds enough punch to peel the flesh from bones.

Pete used the same setup to record his bass lines, so the heart of the sound on the tracks is in the Sixty-Five.

I know I'll be sad to have to go back to my own amp, but at the same time I'm glad. The Sixty-Five demands such accuracy from the player that it is hard to be relaxed when it's growling and chiming behing your back.

We are happy to announce the release of our first cd Gonzo Jazz as a free Creative Commons licensed listen/download through Jamendo. The download requires a bittorrent client and I personally recomend µTorrent for Windows users. You may also need Winamp to listen to the tracks, as they are in OGG-format.

The full cover art will be available as a pdf-file later on through this site and we will provide a CUE-sheet for burning the tracks to a cd. A frontcover picture should be included with the torrent download.

If you feel you absolutely must have a hard copy of the cd, please leave a comment and we'll se what we can do.
